Barbell- A barbell is a piece of exercise equipment used in strength training and weightlifting. It consists of a metal bar that is 5 to 7 feet long. The central portion varies in diameter, but is approximately one inch and is engraved with a crosshatch pattern to help lifters get a good grip. Disc weights are slid onto the outer portions of each side of the barbell to obtain the desired weight.
Gluteals- Pertaining to the buttock region formed by the gluteal muscles (gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus). The gluteal muscles extend the thighs and help support the body in standing.
Hamstrings- Refers to the three major muscles which are located on the back of the upper portion of the legs. These muscles the knee to flex.
Quadriceps- A large muscle group that includes the four muscles on the front of the thigh. It enables the knee to extend, forming a large fleshy mass which covers the front and sides of the femur. It is the strongest and leanest muscle in the human body.
Smith machine- The Smith machine is an item of equipment invented by Jack La Lanne used in weight training. It consists of a barbell that is constrained to move only vertically upwards and downwards on steel runners. New variations allow some forward and backward movement.
Spotter- is a person who assists another person during a strength training exercise, with an emphasis on safety and allowing the participant to lift or push more than he could normally do.
Squat- A squat is performed by bending the legs at the knees and hips, lowering the torso between the legs, and then reversing direction to stand up straight again.
Stabilizers- Stabilizer muscles hold the body in the proper position and help stabilize the movement. The trunk muscles, abdominals and back are stabilizer muscles.
Trainer- A fitness professional who develops and implements an individualized approach to physical fitness, generally working one-on-one with a client. A trainer may also help an individual assess their level of physical fitness and help them work toward a personal fitness goal through proper exercise instruction, nutrition and personal motivation.
